The printed circuit board (PCB) is a key component of electronic components. Most people use them every day without even thinking about them. They are vital to all kinds of industries.


PCB is a board that connects electronic components. They are part of the electronic products we use in our daily lives in all walks of life. They are made of non-conductive materials and have wires, pads and other functional components etched from copper sheets, which can be electrically connected to the electronic components in the product. Components such as capacitors and resistors are also soldered on some PCBs.


Nowadays, PCBs are widely used in electronic products, and there are many types of PCBs. They can be single-sided, double-sided or multi-layered. They can be rigid, flexible, or contain rigid and flexible components.


There are two main types of methods used in the PCB assembly process: through-hole mounting and surface mounting.


1. Through-hole technology


During the through-hole installation process, the assembler puts the component leads into the holes drilled into the bare PCB. This technology is the original technology used for PCBs.


Through-hole technology produces stronger connections than surface mount technology, so it can be used in applications requiring high reliability. This is because the leads run through the entire circuit board instead of being fixed with solder as in surface mounting. Through-hole technology is also useful for testing and prototyping that require manual adjustment of components.

2. Surface Mount Technology


During the surface mounting process, solder is used to mount the components directly on the PCB surface. This method was developed in the 1960s and became popular in the 1980s. Today, it is the most commonly used method of component installation. Surface mount boards use small components called through-holes instead of through-hole components to connect the various layers of the PCB.


Using surface mounting allows the assembler to fix the components on both sides of the circuit board. Surface-mounted components can also be smaller, so that more parts can be mounted on a single board. This reduces costs and has made electronic devices smaller and smaller over the years. Compared with through-hole mounting, surface mounting can also be completed faster and involves fewer processes, thereby further reducing costs.
